Emma Rowland, member of the Club, will give a presentation on the fascinating intersection of feminism and fashion throughout history. Hollywood has perpetuated many myths surrounding historical fashion, and this talk will aim to dispel some of them. The foremost myth that is often heard is that fashion (especially women's fashion) has been oppressive in the past. Emma will be bringing some of her antique/vintage clothing pieces with her to help illustrate her points and give people the opportunity to see them up close.

Emma Rowland has a Master’s in Public Policy from American University. Originally from Scottsdale, Arizona she has lived in DC for the past five years. She is also a member of WNDC, having joined as one of our “Younger Dems” while a student. Policy is her day job, but on the weekends, she works as a colonial-costumed tour guide in Old Town Alexandria.

She has always had a passion and skill for arts and crafts, and it was her grandmother who taught her how to sew. She kept various female relatives’ dresses and accessories dating back to the 1790s, and when her grandmother died, she passed them on to Emma. This started a lifelong interest in historical fashion and antique collections, and she has continued adding to the collection beyond the original pieces she left to Emma.
