October 1, 2023: The Woman's National Democratic Club Salutes Senator Dianne Feinstein

The late Senator Dianne Feinstein can only be described as a force of nature. A powerhouse in American politics for more than 5 decades, she leaves a legacy of extraordinary public service. Glass ceilings? She broke through them with aplomb and grace. Feinstein was the first woman elected to represent California in the US Senate where she served 5 terms. Prior to her service in the US Senate, she served as mayor of San Francisco, California following the assassination of Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Mil. (Mr. Milk was the first openly gay person elected to public office in California.) Subsequently elected to serve two full terms, she balanced nine budgets in a row and brought San Francisco back from the brink of financial ruin.

Feinstein was a moderate in the style of Daniel Patrick Moynihan, having mastered the art of building bridges with the opposition. Those formidable skills enabled her to generate bipartisan support that led to the enactment of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban in 1994. Moreover, she was a stalwart champion of environmental protection and conservation.

Senator Feinstein attended several events at the Woman's National Democratic Club in recent years. In 2017, she served as honorary host for the Democratic Woman of The Year reception honoring Hillary Clinton.

She will be sorely missed.
