Gun Violence Prevention

June 19, 2020: Keep DC Alive – Stop Gun Violence

The WNDC, together with 65 organizations and individuals, signed and sent a letter prepared by the DC Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, to Mayor Bowser and the DC Council, urging action: “to make eliminating gun violence a top priority and to make a substantial and long-term commitment to fund a comprehensive gun violence reduction strategy.” WNDC, together with these groups, emphasized that while some crime has decreased during COVID-19, gun violence has continued to increase, climbing to its highest level in a decade.

We at WNDC ask our DC members to actively engage their Mayor and respective council members in focusing on this critical action and in staying the course on lowering gun violence in DC neighborhoods, communities, and school yards. Moreover, police gun violence is gun violence! The protests everywhere are highlighting that fact for the nation. The letter to Mayor Bowser and the DC Council outlines a comprehensive approach with specifics, ie, structural change, coordination among agencies, resources for public health, and more, to actualize this top priority of eliminating gun violence in DC. Together, we must——can——seize the moment for change and productivity! We must fund gun violence prevention programs to #KEEPDCALIVE.
