Foreign Policy
Mission: To actively support U.S. foreign policies characterized by consultations and cooperation with friendly nations and international organizations, a stance that is more important than ever since the tragic events of September 11, 2001.
Public Policy Positions
The Foreign Policy Task Force supports…
- Sustained and effective U.S. bilateral and multilateral diplomacy to achieve U.S. foreign policy goals
- Continued U.S. and multilateral commitments to Afghanistan until its government is stabilized
- Continued U.S. and multilateral security and reconstruction assistance to Iraq while gradually decreasing U.S. and other foreign military forces
- Cooperation with appropriate regional groups and organizations and the U.N. in seeking to defuse crises in areas such as the Balkans, the Middle East, South Asia and the Korean peninsula
- Reduction or elimination of weapons of mass destruction and strengthening conventional and small arm control agreements
- Increase U.S. intelligence resources to prevent weak and failing states from becoming safe havens for terrorists
- Prompt payment of all debts to the United Nations and to other international organizations
- Continuation of dialogue with China, especially on terrorism and arms control, while urging improvement in its human rights record and its arms sales practices
- Development of more effective methods for dealing with illegal drug production and trafficking in Latin America and Asia
- Elimination of the embargo against Cuba since it has failed to achieve its purpose, an increase in exchange of persons between the United States and Cuba and non-intervention in Cuban internal affairs
- International trade agreements that enhance free and fair trade among nations and give consideration to environment and labor concerns
- U.S. leadership in organizing international action to deal with humanitarian disasters such as Darfur
- Continuation of efforts to expand and deepen democracy and improve human rights throughout the world, including ratification of international agreements designed to accomplish these goals
- Fulfillment of U.S. treaty obligations under the Geneva Convention
- U.S. support for international agreements dealing with environmental issues
