Election Reform
Mission: To promote nationwide reform in elections for federal offices. The goal is to restore the faith of our citizens in the election process, by ensuring that the votes of all registered voters are counted fairly and under uniform standards and that they accurately reflect the will of the people.
Public Policy Positions
The Election Reform Task Force supports…
- Fundamentally changing the way America finances federal election campaigns, building upon the McCain-Feingold Act which calls for curbing the use of “soft money,” encouraging the use of the Internet for small donations, and regulating the increasing use of “soft money” from groups outside the two Party organizations, with the ultimate goal of public financing of federal elections
- Building upon the major reforms mandated in the historic Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA) by establishing uniform standards for voting machines used in federal elections, and requiring paper backup
- Revamping the Federal Elections Commission to ensure it carries out its mission under HAVA in a bipartisan manner, and that it calls for full funding of HAVA’s mandates
- Requiring the major TV networks and radio stations and their local affiliates to donate a specified amount of air time to federal candidates, and to charge the same rates for political ads as for commercial customers
- Promoting Congressional review of the Electoral College role and proposed alternatives; the redistricting process as it affects the outcome of elections and the effects of the Internet to promote candidates and issues
- Working in coalition with Democratic Party organizations, and with other groups who share WNDC views, to promote WNDC goals.
