Economic and Budget Policies
Mission:To promote fiscal policies that reflect our democratic ideals of justice and equality of opportunity, and that increase the common good and national unity, now and in the long term. To promote policies to eliminate our severe budget deficits, and related balance of payments, social services and infrastructure deficits.
Public Policy Positions
The Budget and Economics Task Force supports…
- Repealing tax cuts since April 2001 for the wealthy and for corporations
- Increasing revenues by reducing tax loopholes, exemptions and deductions, strengthening IRS tax enforcement, operations, and reducing tax incentives for overseas investment and tax shelters
Increasing investments in public infrastructure
- Increasing investments in programs that promote human development and capacities
- Increasing federal funding for jointly financed programs administered by states and localities
- Adequate revenues for long-term funding of Social Security as a dedicated insurance benefit, and for Medicare and Medicaid
- Monitoring outsourcing of government agency functions
- Free and fair international trade agreements, including protection of workers and the environment
- Reversing the growing disparities in income distribution in the U.S., e.g. by raising minimum wages and seeking a living wage for all adult workers
