kidsThrough The Woman’s National Democratic Club’s Educational Foundation (WNDC-EF) the club is able to provide community outreach programs as well as fund the historic preservation of the of the clubhouse. In addition, the club’s monthly calendar identifies WNDC-EF luncheon speaker programs that are open to the general public.

The WNDC-EF sponsors programs at two District of Columbia public schools: the Neval Thomas Elementary School and the School Without Walls. WNDC club members regularly tutor students attending Neval Thomas and provide several activities at the club to broaden the children’s social experiences. The Young Woman’s Leadership Program provides junior year students from the School Without Walls the opportunity to attend several WNDC programs and to compete for a scholarship in their senior year.

The WNDC-EF manages the historic preservation of the clubhouse and club’s historic archives that reach back to the 1920’s and the club’s founding members’ participation in the women’s suffrage movement.

The WNDC-EF is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit corporation and donations are tax deductible to the extent permitted by law. It provides individuals interested in supporting the continuing activities of democratic women, with numerous opportunities to donate to educational programs, the historic preservation of the club or the general needs of the organization. Established in 1991, the Foundation enables the WNDC to engage in regular outreach efforts throughout the community.

Student Programs
kids2A Young Woman's Leadership Project strives to interest high school juniors in public affairs and public service. A small group of promising young women is selected each year from a District of Columbia public school to come to WNDC for specially arranged non-partisan discussions of current vital issues. The students are also invited to occasional speaker programs of particular relevance to their studies. An annual award, named in memory of Anne Goodrich, an educator and WNDC past-president, is given to an alum of this program to help defray the cost of higher education. Through the Partners in Education program developed by the District of Columbia Department of Education, the EF has adopted the Neval Thomas Elementary School. The foundation provides tutors and funds for holiday gifts and extracurricular activities such as field trips.

Historic Preservation

The Educational Foundation focuses its preservation efforts on WNDC's landmark nineteenth-century clubhouse. Purchased by WNDC in 1927, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and is now open to the public as a museum. An historic preservation fund helps maintain the building and its collections. In cooperation with Cultural Tourism DC, EF promotes interest in the surrounding Dupont Circle neighborhood.

Collections

The WNDC Archives are a rich resource of materials documenting the club's history from its founding in 1922 to the present. They contain club records and publications, photographs, newspaper clippings, portraits, political memorabilia, and audio and video tapes of speaker programs. Since the mid 1970s, the club has recorded interviews with distinguished WNDC members whose oral histories may be purchased or researched in the archives. The EF also maintains a small library named in honor of Eleanor Roosevelt. The Eleanor Roosevelt Papers
