Art from VSA Washington, DC is showcased in WNDC’s new exhibition, Growth Through Art. Since its founding in 1981, VSA , DC has served talented children and young adults with special needs in the Washington , DC , area, employing the arts as an innovative method of education to provide tools for success in life.
VSA, DC is an affiliate of VSA, The International Organization on Arts and Disability, a nonprofit organization founded over 35 years ago by Jean Kennedy Smith to create a society where people with disabilities learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts.
Each year 7 million people participate in VSA programs through a nationwide network of affiliates and in 51 countries around the world. The Smithsonian Institution and the Kennedy Center have sponsored VSA events. Many outstanding museums across the country, including the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; RISD in Providence , RI ; New York ’s Museum of Modern Art and the Bishop Museum in Honolulu have exhibited VSA student art. Annual VSA art festivals also raise public awareness.
The most visible component of VSA , DC ’s educational and training programs is the Articulate Gallery and Studios, a colorful complex located at 16th and L Streets NW in downtown Washington . Much of the artwork in the WNDC exhibition was created and displayed there. Several pieces are from the ARTiculate Employment Training Program.
