WNDC’s illustrious, Betsy Clark, is a retired career Foreign Service officer. Her political reporting won numerous awards from the State Department. She personally received from CIA Director Robert Gates the National Intelligence Community Collectors Award for her reporting from South Africa in the mid 1980s. She was a special assistant to the Undersecretary for Political Affairs. Directing the State Department's Human Rights and Democracy Fund, she traveled to Burma and met with imprisoned leader Aung San Suu Kyi on the use of democracy support funds for Burma.
She has published extensively on global democratization in journal articles, book chapters, book reviews, op-ed pieces and over 20 contributions to online journals. She is co-editor and chapter contributor to Human Rights and US. Foreign Policy. She has served as an official elections observer for National Democratic Institute (NDI)’s missions to parliamentary elections in Jordan in 2010, Lebanon in 2009, and Yemen in 2003. She was a fellow at the National Endowment for Democracy and Associate at Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of Diplomacy, where she taught courses on democracy promotion.
