Charniele Herring is a longtime leader and 22 year resident of the West End of Alexandria. She has worked to protect affordable housing, expanded opportunities for small businesses, and has twice been named Legislative Hero by the League of Conservation Voters. She was named 2009 Rookie of the Year by the Virginia Education Association. In 2011, Delegate Herring successfully introduced legislation to eliminate predatory lending in the Bail Bond Industry, curb underage drinking, and protect victims by expanding the effectiveness of emergency protective orders.
As a former President of the West End Business Association, she understands the need to work with business and community leaders to keep the Commonwealth moving forward. Delegate Herring serves as the Democratic Whip in the Virginia House of Delegates and continues to be an effective voice for our values in Richmond. As a former member of the State Council on the Status of Women, and former Chair of the Commission on Women in Alexandria, last year in the face of the TRAP legislation she re-formed the Virginia Legislative Reproductive Health Caucus and acts as its Chair.
She has coordinated legislative messaging with ally groups and Virginia Legislators, and been one of Governor McDonnell’s most vocal opponents in his attempt to restrict women’s rights, speaking the truth about the Republican War on Women in both state and national press. From the committee room to the newsroom, Delegate Charniele Herring has been one of the most active in the fight to maintain women’s rights in the Commonwealth.
